Samarth completed his PhD in the field of Plant Molecular Biology from the University of Canterbury in 2019. He spends time in Delhi and in New Zealand - mostly Christchurch, and will soon spend the majority of his time in Dunedin, as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Otago. Samarth is available to liaise and connect with Indian alumni in Delhi and in Palmerston North in New Zealand. Samarth has strong interests in sports, music, and event management. He likes to play drums, cook, and travel during his free time. Samarth also served as a President for the University of Canterbury Indian Students Association 2017-2018.
Can you tell us a bit about what you studied at UC and what you are up to now?
I obtained my PhD in Plant Biology at UC, working on how plants remember summer temperature cues to flower intermittently. Currently, I am working as a Research Fellow at the School of Biological Sciences, studying how plants perceive and respond to distinct acoustic signals. It is part of an emerging field of phytoacousticsand will help us in developing novel solutions for sustainable agriculture.
What memory stands out to you from your time at UC?
One of the memories that stands out is the amount of exposure for an international student that it provides. As an emerging researcher, not only do I get to do cool science and learn cutting-edge scientific techniques but also gain invaluable experience outside the lab. It helped me build confidence to foster new collaborations and a global network, participate in outreach programs, volunteer for social service and immerse myself in learning about new cultures.
What is your favourite thing about where you live?
Christchurch is a beautiful city and is close to many ski fields. I enjoy, particularly going to the Mt Hutt ski field during the ski season. The city also has many cafes, restaurants serving distinct cuisines, and a vibrant culture.
